Lacrosse

This week the students will get one lacrosse session in the gym. It’s the oldest organized sport in North America, with its origins with the indigenous people of North America as early as the 12th century. Canada’s national winter sport is hockey and Canada’s national summer sport is lacrosse. I hope the class has fun learning about this exciting sport.

Welcome to Division 9!

I’d like to welcome everyone to Division 9 which is a grade 2/3 class with 19 students. We are located in room # 11 of our school. In Art, the students have been creating First Nations salmon. They coloured their salmon, cut them out, and then used the leftover scrap paper to stuff the salmon with eggs or roe. The artwork is on the bulletin board outside of our classroom. Please feel free to check out their wonderful work.

First Nations – Salmon

The students in Division 10 were fortunate to have Dawn from Indigenous ( Aboriginal ) Education visit our classroom. She taught the students how to make First Nations salmon. After cutting out their fish they used the remaining paper to create salmon eggs inside their artwork. Keep up the good work Division 10!

Aboriginal Education – Button Blankets

Last week, Dawn, an elder from the Aboriginal Education program taught us about the talking stick and talking circle. She is returning to our class on Wednesday to teach us about button blankets and First Nations art. We still need parent helpers to help the students with the needles and thread. Grandparents are also welcome in our classroom.

First Nations – Button Blankets

Last week we had a visit from Dawn in the Aboriginal Education program. She taught us all about button blankets. The students then had the opportunity to make their own button blankets using black and red felt, buttons, a needle and thread. Each student had a choice of creating a button blanket with a salmon, raven, wolf, eagle, owl and killer whale. Adult volunteers helped the students to thread their needles and sewing on the buttons.
