Steller’s Jay

The Steller’s Jay is British Columbia’s provincial bird. They are common in forest wildernesses but are also fixtures of campgrounds, parklands, and backyards, where they are quick to spy bird feeders as well as unattended picnic items. When patrolling the woods, Steller’s Jays stick to the high canopy, but you’ll hear their harsh, scolding calls if they’re nearby.

Art Project – Yarn Sticks

The students in Division 10 created their own yarn sticks. I purchased the wood, made individual pieces, and provided coloured feathers and beads. The students should be proud of their work which is now displayed on the bulletin board in the hallway outside of our classroom. If you have some time, please have a look at their great work.

Valentine’s Day

In class, we wrote about things we love. We had a class discussion and generated some ideas. For example, ‘I love reading a book with my mom’. The students wrote about four things that they love and their work is now on the bulletin board, in the hallway, right outside of our classroom. You can see your child’s work through the window from the courtyard area. Please take the time to check out their fantastic writing. I hope everyone has a happy Valentine’s day!

Scholastic Book Orders

On Monday, February 7th I’ll be sending home the Scholastic – February English Flyer with the students which is for all ages. This is another way to promote literacy in our classroom. Since the start of the pandemic, Scholastic has changed the way teachers, students, and schools order books. Instead of providing the teacher with a form and a cheque, parents are now being asked to create an account with Scholastic. The books you order will be sent directly to your home and teachers are no longer allowed to use cheques. When you place your order you enter a class code and the classroom teacher earns a few dollars of bonus coupons which are used in the classroom to purchase books for students to read and stickers for their weekly Spelling quizzes. The Scholastic flyer will be in the plastic pocket at the front of your child’s planner. You can visit the Scholastic website here and our classroom code is RC228304.

First Nations – Salmon

The students in Division 10 were fortunate to have Dawn from Indigenous ( Aboriginal ) Education visit our classroom. She taught the students how to make First Nations salmon. After cutting out their fish they used the remaining paper to create salmon eggs inside their artwork. Keep up the good work Division 10!
