Fifteen Pencils Pushed Through A Plastic Bag Filled With Water Without Spilling A Drop

In Science we took an ordinary Ziploc plastic bag and filled it with water. Then we pushed 15 sharp pencils through it without spilling a drop. As a class we discussed why the bag didn’t leak or spill water all over the floor of our classroom. The explanation is as simple as understanding the chemistry of the Ziploc plastic bag, which is made out of a material called a polymer. As the pencil passes through the plastic bag the polymer seals around the pencil and prevents any water from leaking. The pencils don’t have to be really sharp, but they do have to be pointy enough to penetrate the plastic bag. Try this Science experiment at home with your parents, they won’t believe it!
